WordPress Backup and Restore: A Practical Recovery Plan
Build a WordPress recovery plan with database and file backups, off-site copies, restoration tests, recovery objectives and a safe rollback process.
Backups are often discussed only after a website breaks. A useful recovery plan is created before an incident and answers three questions: what must be restored, how much recent data can the business afford to lose, and how quickly must the site return? Those answers should guide backup frequency and storage choices.
Back Up the Complete Application
A WordPress recovery set normally includes the database, uploads, themes, plugins, custom code and configuration required to rebuild the site. Confirm where secrets and environment-specific settings are stored so recovery does not depend on undocumented manual steps.
Choose Frequency From Change Rate
A brochure site with occasional updates may need a different schedule from a WooCommerce store receiving orders throughout the day. Define a recovery point objective—the amount of recent data the business can tolerate losing—and use it to set backup frequency.
Keep an Independent Copy
Keep at least one backup outside the production server or hosting account. Separate storage helps if the server is compromised, disks fail or an administrator accidentally removes local backups. Restrict access and protect backups because they can contain customer data and credentials.
Test Restoration Safely
Restore a backup to a staging environment and verify pages, media, logins, forms, plugins and database consistency. Check that the restored site does not send real customer emails or process live payments while being tested.
Plan the Rollback
Document who approves recovery, which backup is selected, how DNS or maintenance mode will be handled and how new data will be reconciled. For an online store, orders created after the backup may need special handling before rollback.
Review and Document the Process
Record backup locations, retention periods, encryption, restore steps and responsible contacts. Review the plan after major website changes and periodically confirm that a recent backup can still be restored.
